I’ve dealt with acne since my teenage years, and somehwere along the way melasma, fine lines, and post-acne texture decided to join the chat. For years, my skin felt impossible to figure out. I was oily through the T-zone, dry around the jawline, prone to breakouts, and constantly trying products that either did too much or not enough. After years of trial and error, I finally found a routine that brought my skin back into balance, and this is the one I keep coming back to.

For context, the first photo was taken about four years ago, and I was actually wearing makeup on my way to work. The second photo was taken first thing in the morning with no makeup at all. I’m four years older in the second photo, which is wild to me, because my skin genuinely looks better now than it did in my early 30s. These are the products and steps that helped me get there.

Morning Routine

Step 1: Prequel Hyphochlorus Acid Spray

This is one of the most underrated steps in my morning routine. Hypochlorous acid helps calm irritation, reduce redness, and support acne-prone skin without being harsh or stripping. I like using it first thing in the morning as a clean, refreshing reset before I apply anything else.

Step 2: Timeless Vitamin C Serum

Vitamin C is your best defense against dull, uneven skin. It brightens dark spots, evens skin tone, and protects against free radical damage from sun and pollution throughout the day. It also boosts collagen production over time. Always apply it in the morning when your skin needs that antioxidant protection the most. I am loyal to the Timeless Vitamin C serum. It is a dupe for the nearly $200 Skin Ceuticals brand but for a fraction of the price.

Step 3: Vichy Mineral B89 Serum

This serum is pure hydration. Packed with hyaluronic acid and Vichy’s naturally mineralized water. It plumps the skin, strengthens your moisture barrier, and creates the perfect base for SPF and your foundation. It layers beautifully under everything and works for every skin type. I am addicted. It brings my skin back to life.

Step 4: La Roche-Posay Anthelios Tinted Mineral SPF 50

If there is one product category I will never shutup about, it is sunscreen. Daily SPF is the single most important part of any anti-aging routine, but if you deal with melasma or hyperpigmentation, the type of sunscreen you use matters even more. Tinted mineral SPFs are especially helpful because the iron oxides in them can offer added protection against visible light, which can make pigmentation worse.

My go-to is the La Roche-Posay Anthelios Tinted Mineral SPF 50. It layers greats over serums, doesn’t pill under makeup, and the tint eliminates the white cast. Note: The tint works best for light to medium skin tones. If you have a deeper complexion, the brand Black Girl Sunscreen is an excellent alternative that is specifically formulated for deeper skin tones.

Nighttime Routine

Step 1: CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser

After a full day, a proper skin cleanse is non-negotiable. The CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser is a product that dermatologists genuinely recommend. It cleanses without disrupting your moisture barrier.

Step 2: Differin Adapalene Gel (Retinoid)

Differen is the only FDA-approved over-the-counter retinoid available without a prescription, and it’s the most effective thing you can put on your skin at night for acne, fine lines, and cell turnover. Apply a pea-sized amount to clean dry skin, and let it fully absorb before moving to th next step. Because retinoids can cause irritation, start with just 2 -3 nights per week and slowly build up as your skin adjusts (some people are more sentive than others and that’s completely normal).

Tip: If you experience dryness or peeling in the beginning, don’t quit. That’s just your skin adjusting. Stick to two nights a week and push through - your skin will thank you.

Step 3: The Ordinary Multi-Peptide + Copper Peptides 1% (GHK-CU Serum)

This is the most underrated step in the entire routine. Copper peptides are one of the most powerful anti-aging ingredients available. Everyone is talking about “injecting” GHK-CU. However, studies show copper peptides are also effective when applied topically without the risks of injections. The Ordinary makes it incredibly accessible at a low price.

Tip: Copper peptides and retinoids are a perfect pairing. The peptides essentially soothe and rpair what the retinoid is working hard to resurface.

Step 4: SkinFix Barrier + Triple Lipid-Peptide Cream

This is the final step that seals everything in and lets your skin do its repair work overnight. SkinFix Barrier Cream is specifically formulated to strengthen and restore you skin barrier, which is especially important when you’re using actives like retinoids and peptides nightly. Think of it as a the protective blanket your skin sleeps in. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP ON RETINOID NIGHTS.

What You’d Spend for the Full Routine:

Morning Routine: $122

Nighttime Routine: $110

Total Investment: $232

I know $232 sounds like a lot at first glance, but this is not a routine you’re replacing every month. Most of these products last anywhere from three to six months, which brings the real monthly cost down quite a bit. When I think about it that way, it feels far more reasonable, especially for a routine that has genuinely improved my skin. However, the key to this entire routine is consistency! Products won’t work if they stay on the shelf.
